History of Darjeeling

Early in the 19th century, Darjeeling was considered a possible summer hideaway for British officials, troops, and their families while India was under the dominion of the East India Company. The Kingdom of Sikkim leased the small mountain ridge, which British India subsequently acquired. On the slopes below Darjeeling, experiments with tea cultivation were very successful. Numerous laborers were hired to clear the forests, construct houses in the European style, and work on the tea plantations, mostly from Nepal. The indigenous peoples were evicted due to massive deforestation.
