The destination Darjeeling is in West Bengal, the northernmost region of India. It is situated in the Eastern Himalayas and is typically 2,045 meters above sea level (6,709 ft). [9] The easternmost province of Nepal is located to the west of Darjeeling, followed by the Kingdom of Bhutan to the east, the Indian state of Sikkim to the north, and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north. Bangladesh is to the south and southeast, while the majority of the state of West Bengal is to the south and southwest, with a small portion of that state’s territory connecting it to the Darjeeling region. The third-highest mountain in the world, Kangchenjunga, rises to the north and is clearly visible on a clear day.

Early in the 19th century, Darjeeling was considered a possible summer hideaway for British officials, troops, and their families while India was under the dominion of the East India Company. The Kingdom of Sikkim leased the small mountain ridge, which British India subsequently acquired. On the slopes below Darjeeling, experiments with tea cultivation were very successful. Numerous laborers were hired to clear the forests, construct houses in the European style, and work on the tea plantations, mostly from Nepal. The indigenous peoples were evicted due to massive deforestation. Darjeeling and the surrounding area saw the establishment of residential schools for the education of British-domiciled Indian citizens’ children. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a cutting-edge narrow-gauge mountain railway, began transporting tea out of the town for export to other countries in the late 19th century. Rich Indians from the plains bought the cottages in Darjeeling after India gained its independence from the British Empire in 1947, while out-of-town Indian business owners and conglomerates bought the tea estates.
The majority of the people who live in Darjeeling now are descended from the native and foreign laborers who worked there when the town was first built. Although their common tongue, Nepali, has received official recognition at the state and federal levels in India, neither the recognition nor the ability of the language’s speakers to significantly influence their political affairs has led to the creation of meaningful employment for the language’s speakers. The town’s economy is mostly supported by the tea business and tourism. Following India’s independence, deforestation in the area has harmed the ecology, which has an impact on the enduring springs that provide the town’s water supply. In the meantime, Darjeeling’s population has increased dramatically over time, and unchecked development, heavy traffic, and water shortages are all too prevalent. Due to a lack of opportunities that matched their qualifications, many young residents who attended public schools have started to migrate. They have experienced racism and discrimination in several Indian cities, just like emigrants from other parts of northeastern India.
